One of the main reasons we love traveling for tradeshows is to be able to interact with our customers face to face. DP for Binary Pulse Studios, Douglas Brian Miller, met us at NAB in Vegas this past April and recently reached out to let us know what he’s been up to and how his Core SWX gear has been assisting all his productions. Take a look below to learn more about Douglas Brian Miller yourself.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
I started out in the late 1990’s working for my father as a behind the scenes photographer and then quickly grew into the broadcast world working for outlets like KNBC, KCAL and KTLA shooting content for various broadcast shows and news programs.
Then I entered the agency world with J. Walter Thompson in the early 2000’s and followed my film dreams into the commercial space with clients like Boeing, Starbucks, The U.S. Border Patrol, Union Bank, Paramount Pictures and more as a Director of Photography.
I continue my passion today with clients like T-Mobile, MetroPCS, E-Z UP, Experian, ANN INC., and more -all still while working with my agency and studio partners.
2. What is your favorite part about being a DP?
I love the challenge of making art/ making something that to the normal eye looks boring and drab look cinematic with purpose.
3. What is one of your most memorable productions and why?
One of my most memorable productions would have been a commercial anthem we did for the City of Hope cancer research center with my agency partner J. Walter Thompson in 2012. Both my parents had cancer and working with the team watching them save lives, was beyond rewarding. It felt so wonderful to give a little back and help put their brand awareness into the professional cinema landscape.
4. What Core SWX gear do you use, and how is it beneficial to your productions?
My team and I have been using the Core 98 [#Hypercore98S] series bricks and chargers now since late last year and I must say we are blown away. Being an avid IDX user for over 10 years, Core SWX is in a category all to themselves. Exceptional performance, even in the harshest conditions and so much more bang for your buck. The LCD readout alone is a great example of the extra value you get that the “other guys” don’t offer at this price point.
We’ve put these batteries to the harshest tests with many shoots traveling back and forth in and out of the country all without a hitch rolling on multiple Sony FS7 and FS5 shoulder rigs.
5. What exciting projects should we look forward to seeing next from you?
Our newest adventures are taking us all over the country shooting all different types of content. From interviews and b-roll with T-Mobile for a series of recruitment docs to shooting five TV commercials for E-Z UP Shelters to China and South Korea shooting industrials for a major micro chip manufacturer. Good times.
