Jeff Colhoun

Jeff Colhoun is a California based travel photographer and cinematographer who works with tourism boards, brands, and non-profit organizations to help raise awareness of movements dedicated to global impact.  As he travels around the world to places such as Africa and Asia, he relies on the Powerbase Edge battery pack to keep his Blackmagic Design Pocket 4K running all day long. Take a look below to learn more about what Jeff does and how the Powerbase Edge is beneficial to his productions.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career.

I’m a travel photographer and cinematographer. I primarily work with tourism boards, international non-profits and brands. Whether it’s a documentary film for an NGO or covering a subject for a travel publication I find myself trying to tell the story of what it’s like at that place in that moment.

2. What nonprofit organizations and movements do you mainly work with to help raise awareness?

It ranges from environmental groups in central Asia to humanitarian non-profits working in Africa. If the cause improves the quality of an undeserved community or works to protect wilderness and at risk wildlife I’m in.

3. What was one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on and why?

That’s a tough one. I spent 3 summers in Mongolia filming for an environmental group and that was an unforgettable experience. My second summer I was in the Darkhad Valley for 5 weeks filming a group of rangers who patrolled 3 different parks surrounding the valley. I was charging on solar, doing backups in a tent and was lucky enough to be taken into their strictly protected area (nobody allowed) to track their Argali and Ibex with a drone. They are both on the endangered red list

4. What Core SWX do you use and how is it beneficial to your productions?

Lately I’ve been moving towards a smaller more minimalist setup so right now I’m using the Powerbase Edge. On my most recent project I was able to get a day of shooting on it using my Blackmagic Design Pocket 4k. When I’m filming in remote locations there are no re shoots. If the battery dies or has an internal short (yes this has happened to me) I’ll miss a shot. Whether I’m travelling to Africa, Mongolia or South East Asia Core SWX batteries are in my bag.

5. What upcoming projects should we keep an eye on for next?

My next shoot I’ll be trekking through the Peruvian Andes shooting a tourism project and writing a story for an outdoor brand.
