Recap of NAB 2019

NAB 2019 kicked off our tradeshow season with a bang between chatting with all of our great industry friends and meeting new ones, winning a Production HUB award for HELIX, releasing a new NPF style battery, having awesome interviews, and drinks at our annual Core Happy Hour. If you happened to miss the show this year, don’t worry because we’re recapping it all for you right here.

NAB-2019-Booth-Setup_web

The new award winning Helix series provides the most complete on-board battery solution ever offered in the market.  The uniquely designed Helix series allows the battery packs to function as a standard 14v V-mount or Gold mount pack in all applications, including charging on standard V-mount and Gold mount chargers.  Then when coupled with a Helix mount plate, users are able to access the higher voltage function, yet still have access to 14v for other production accessories such as a monitor. The packs encompass the features of Hypercore, with the added function of 14v/28v simultaneous voltage output and RFID to read battery vitals via the VoltBridge ID app.

Helix_nab-recap

To accompany the Helix batteries to access the high voltage feature are the Helix mount plates and power management control (PMC) plates. Currently there are models for different high end Cine cameras such as direct mounts for ARRI cameras, and V-mount and Gold mount adapters for Sony Venice and RED Ranger. In addition there are shark-fin plates in V-mount and Gold mount. Even further, the PMC plates take power management concerns away from the camera, and provide a “hot swappable” platform between on-board and block battery/AC mains. The plates use a standard 2-pin Fischer connector for the power input on the plates, simplifying the array of cables production companies and rental companies need to inventory, while addressing many different camera makes. Also equipped on the PMC plates is an on-board LCD to monitor input percentage/voltage of the power sources, as well as current draw of the entire camera setup.

helix-mount_nab-recap

Additionally at NAB, we introduced the NPF Flat Pack and Cube-24. The NPF-SHD is a near 60wh battery designed to provide a lower profile powering solution for the SmallHD Focus monitors, allowing full rotation of the monitor on a tilt arm while not blocking the air vents on the back of the monitor. The pack features a 4-stage LED gauge along with a 7-17v DC input to allow users to powertap into the battery pack on larger camera rig configurations and to also charge from. Although the pack can be charged via the DC input, it can also be charged on standard L-series chargers.

The Cube-24 follows the footsteps of the original Core Cube. This new Cube-24 is a 200w AC to DC 24v power supply. It’s lightweight, all aluminum, fan-less, and capable of powering the most power hungry cameras through the two 3-pin XLR outputs.

To help cover the new products, we were fortunate to have our friends from Newsshooter, Cinema 5D, Production HUB, Digital Cinema Society, Abel Cine, Broadcast Beat, Indie Shooter, and DIY Photography stop by for interviews. Click on each of their names to be able to watch and learn more info about the products, including some other tidbits about power such as travel regulations.

Not only did we have our gear in our two booths, we had them spread throughout the show floor. Companies such as RED, Blackmagic Design, Band Pro, Zacuto, Zeiss, Atomos, Tilta, and HIVE had Core SWX power solutions displayed which we’d also like to thank them. In addition, we’d like to thank RED, Blackmagic Design, SmallHD, Freefly Systems, HIVE, and Zacuto for your loaners during the show as well.

2018 in Review

Over at Core SWX, we had another wonderful year. We know we couldn’t have done it without our incredible customers, partners and ambassadors, and we’d like to thank all of you before we look back into what highlighted our year.

We had multiple new and innovative power solutions released this year, but a few that especially highlighted our year were the Powerbase Edge, EVO, and the expansion of our VoltBridge technology with a revamped app and VoltBridge enabled Fleet chargers.

The Powerbase Edge, announced prior to NAB 2018, is the most unique power solution for a DSLR or small form cine setup, allowing extended runtimes for hundreds of different cameras (Blackmagic Pocket 4K, Sony a7 series, Panasonic GH series, to name a few) as well as the option to power additional accessories such a monitor or light through the two powertaps and the two USBs. In addition, the 49wh battery pack has two mounting options, the 1/4-20 screw mount or standard v-mount, and a runtime LCD providing you battery expectancy down to the minute.

edge_recap-2018

The second product that hit it off in 2018 is the battery backup and power distribution block, EVO. The built-in 49wh lithium-ion battery pack capable of handling up to a 15A draw provides more than enough time to keep your camera running for a battery swap. In addition to the backup function, the EVO has a “boost” or battery assist function should your on-board pack be unable to handle the startup current necessary.  To easily monitor remaining battery percentage of your on-board pack, the backup battery status, and the current load your camera system is consuming, there is a backlit LCD screen.

EVO_recap

Lastly, the release of our new and improved VoltBridge app, along with the integration of our VoltBridge technology into our advanced Fleet chargers.  Having the Bluetooth based technology in the chargers makes it easier than ever to manage your battery fleet right from an iOS or Android device. The functions of the charger capable to control from the app include viewing all your smart battery data from cycle count to temperature, putting your packs into SafeFly mode (discharging or charge to 30%), test mode (determines battery health and recharge performance), and of course charge mode.

voltbridge-fleet_recap

To showcase all of these new products, we attended many tradeshows throughout the year where we saw many old friends as well as made many new ones. Starting with NAB in Las Vegas is always a blast and it spirals from there. Shortly after, we headed to Dallas for Texas Production Roundup, LA and Atlanta for each Cine Gear Expo, and to round out our shows in the States was NAB NY. We also had fun attending shows in the UK/EU region at MPS Show in London, IBC Show in Amsterdam, and Cinec in Germany. Speaking of UK/EU, we were also thrilled to announce in 2018 our new partnership with the UK distributor, Holdan. They now assist in making the Core SWX product line more accessible in the UK and European markets.

nab-2018_recap

Just like 2017, we had the pleasure of attending many events such as all of the ones during the tradeshows, the SOC Awards, and the ASC Awards. In addition, we were an annual sponsor of PERG where we enjoyed all of their events as well.

We look forward to having another great year and would like thank everyone again who keeps supporting and inspiring us to keep Providing the Power to CreateTM.

In the spirit of giving, we’re giving away big!

This epic giveaway is now over. We would love to thank all of you who have entered and showed so much support for this giveaway. We’d also like to congratulate the lucky winner selected at random, Matt Liparulo.

How to Power Panasonic Cameras

Although Panasonic is known all around the World for a wide variety of products and technology, we’re going to focus on powering their Professional Video segment, from smaller DSLR type cameras, to their cinema line. Like many other camera manufacturers, they offer their own line of power solutions, but there is always room for some alternative power solutions which might be a better fit for the operator. All of our battery packs also use Panasonic lithium ion cells, so it’s a win-win for all parties involved.

GH5_PB_SquareLet’s begin with how to power the GH series ranging from the older Panasonic GH2, up to the latest new addition, Panasonic GH5S. All of the models in the series will be compatible with the Powerbase Edge battery pack using the DMW-BLF19 battery adapter cable which is routed through the cable exit point on the battery door of the camera, making the integration seamless. Both items come together in a kit with a p-tap charger, providing an all-in-one power solution (Sku: PBE-GH). The 49wh pack with an 8A load will keep the camera running for approximately 7.5 hours! The Edge is also outfitted with two powertaps and two USB ports for additional accessories, a backlit runtime LCD providing remaining battery life down to the minute, and two different mounting options. The camera operator has the ability to mount by using either the ¼-20 screw mount that can go anywhere such as directly under the camera, on a cage, or any other type of accessory that as a ¼-20 thread, or it can also be mounted by using the standard v-mount side.

To make the Edge battery pack even more versatile, you can use the same battery for many other cameras as long as you have the appropriate adapter cable. We offer an adapter cable for select Panasonic cameras that take the VBR style battery such as the EVA1 camera. It comes in a kit as well with model number PBE-VBR. If you already have the battery pack and/or charger and don’t want to purchase as an all-in-one kit then all of the Powerbase Edge adapter cables are also available separately. All Powerbase Edge adapter cables are 6” in length, but if needed, there is an extension cable (PBEC-EXT) offered which provides an extra 18”.

Moving forward, another solution we offer to power Panasonic cameras accepting the VBR style battery pack, is the small yet powerful, NANO-VBR98. The NANO-VBR98 is a 98wh (7.4v, 13200mah) pack with a 12vdc boosted powertap. Being that the NANO-VBR98 is a 7.4v, yet with the 12vdc powertap, it allows you to simultaneously power the camera and additional accessories including external monitor, light, wireless transmitter, etc. The pack is also equipped with a 4-stage LED to easily gauge how much juice you have left, and when you run out; you can charge it back up on the OEM Panasonic chargers.

panasonic-blog
Now onto our intelligent brick style battery packs, the Nano and Hypercore series. The Nano series is a slim 98wh pack, and is the more entry level option, with the difference from Hypercore being that they have a lower continuous load at 8A and no multipurpose runtime LCD. The Hypercore series capacities range from 98wh to 293wh (wow, that’s macho!). The Hypercore series all have a multipurpose runtime LCD, and have load handling capabilities. There are two 98wh options, depending on the operators form factor preference, the smaller form Hypercore 9 Mini and slimmer yet taller Hypercore Slim 98 (both 12A load). There are also higher capacity offerings, from the Hypercore 150, 150wh pack, and the travel friendly Hypercore Prime which is a two-part split 190wh battery to make it acceptable for air travel. Last but not least, the king of them all is the Hypercore XL, a 293wh pack with a 15A continuous load (20A peak).

All of the brick battery models communicate data to the cameras LCD/VF, come in both the standard v-mount and gold mount style packs, and have a p-tap and USB. If you are using any camera within the Panasonic lineup that is outfitted with either a v-mount or gold mount plate such as the Panasonic VariCam LT, then any of these will be great for you. Of course, the higher the capacity, the longer the operational runtime. Please also keep in the mind that anything under 100wh is air travel friendly for up to 15 packs in your carry-on bag. The Hypercore 150 is allowed as 2 standalone and 1 connected to your device. Anything over 160wh is not acceptable for air travel.

We hope this covers all the bases for you to get your Panasonic camera’s powered up with reliable long-lasting power solutions. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us.

Core Driven at Winter Olympics 2018

Every four years another Winter Olympics rolls around where we get to see athletes from all over the world compete for their dream of winning Gold. To capture the event’s award winning moments as well as the Korean culture, NBC selected many camera operators, making sure not one moment was missed during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games held in PyeongChang. We had the pleasure of knowing a few talented camera operators relying on our battery packs to power their gear.

Corey_Olympics1Corey Koniniec from production company Motion State was one of the only RED Digital Cinema camera operators and only MoVI operator selected. He filmed an array of events from halfpipe skiing, to aerials, and freestyle, but his primary focus was documenting snowboarding, composing a story of the history of snowboarding in the Olympics, in celebration of it’s 20th anniversary at the Games. To make sure he had the best spot to film each event, he would arrive to the venue hours before to scope out the locations. He had to also leave extra time to carry all of his gear up the mountain.  Every morning, scaling the mountain and hauling both of his RED camera packages took him 2-3 hours!  He employed HC9Mini’s and HCSlim8’s to power his DSMC2 with a Fujinon 25-300 lens to get long lens coverage.  His second rig was another DSMC2 on a MoVI Pro to get the stabilized, steady-cam style shots. In the negative degree temperatures, Corey was blown away by how well the Hypercore packs held up for a day of shooting without needing to go back to base to charge up. He had told us that “the Hypercore’s truly saved my ass.”  After a day of shooting, he would go back to charge up the batteries for the next day, and take his media cards to the dedicated media ingest facility at the venue.  There, the crews would transcode and feed all of their footage to the main broadcasting facility at the Games. From there, it would be shared with the NBC editors to use for daily highlights and the documentary project.

Other Core Driven camera operators include Zach Trinca, using a Sony FS7 powered by HC9 Mini, and his colleague Brett Carlsen who was using a Canon C100 rig powered by HC9 Mini as well.  Before the games started, Zach and Brett shot a number of cultural features in Seoul, from cafes where you could pet sheep, to exploring old traditional villages. Once the events started, they shot a lot of fan centric content, slow-motion shots of people’s reactions, interviews, and specific athletes in action for feature pieces, focusing on slope style skiing, women’s half pipe, and hockey. Since their job was to focus both on the Korean culture and the sporting events, everyday was different, mentioning “Some days we would be going from event to event, other days we were getting up at 4am to go shoot a sunrise or going off the beaten path to shoot at a coffee factory.”

ZachTrinca_Olympics1-WEB

While they were all over PyeongChang filming, the weather conditions varied greatly, at times down by the beach, and then alongside a snowy mountain, but no matter what the conditions, the battery packs performed just the same. Brett couldn’t find enough words to say how impressed he was with the HC9 Minis, but one of his favorite features was the runtime LCD, stating “The readout is so awesome; being able to check your battery life with the touch of a button and know your percentage and run time was priceless.” Zach also added that the lightweight and long camera runtimes using the HC9 Mini batteries made a difference when needing to lug his gear around all day. He said “The Core SWX batteries played a huge role in maintaining a reliable camera rig throughout the Olympic Games.”

Recap of 2017

2017 has been quite the year for Core SWX. Some highlights include releasing many new products such as the HC9 Mini battery packs and Fleet Micro chargers, transforming the 98Wh battery line, attending tradeshows and meeting many new wonderful people.

The 2017 transformation of the battery line all started with the popular HC9 Mini battery packs and the whole idea to make more compact, powerful solutions for our clientele. Between the short, compact form factor of the HC9 Mini and consisting of a powerful 98Wh, 12A draw cells with features like the multipurpose runtime LCD screen, powertap and USB port, it’s hard to deny they’re one of the most advanced packs on the market today. Being a big hit in the small cine camera community, especially with the RED Digital Cinema DSMC2 users, here are a few in-action photos we found from users on Instagram.

recap-instagram-posts

Acting like a sibling to the HC9 Mini, basically a non-identical twin (although it came months later), is the Hypercore Slim 98. It contains the same “powerfulness” (98Wh, 12A draw) and features within the HC9 Mini, but it has a different form factor to adhere more to the ENG/Broadcast community. The Slim design and high draw power can also be great for other power needs such as power hungry LED panels or video monitors:

HCS98S_Atomos Sumo

The last addition to the new 98Wh line is the Nano battery packs. They are incased within the same slim, lightweight design of the legacy Hypercore Slim 7, making them perfect for all of the UAV and handheld Gimbal users out there. Since they have a lower continuous draw at 8A, other great applications for them can be director monitors or some lower draw LED panels.

To charge up all of these new battery packs (and others of course) are the award winning Fleet Micro chargers. Released at NAB Show 2017, the Fleet Micro is considered the most dynamic charger on the market today being equipped with multiple features like no other charger out there.  Besides being the fastest charger (four 98Wh in 2.5 hours), the charger has a multifunction LCD on the front, it offers a test mode function to determine battery health and recharge performance, and a SafeFly mode to charge or discharge the connected packs to 30% to comply with air travel regulations. In addition, it can act as 90w DC 4-pin XLR power supply to power most cameras and can double as a battery bank when in “Hypercine” power supply mode (unregulated 12v-16.8v DC).

fleet-micro-recap

A mini power supply also announced this past year was the Core Cube. If you’re looking for a perfect power supply for “run and gun” productions then the Cube is for you. It’s lightweight, fan-less, compact and offers two XLR outputs providing up to 200w combined.

To show off all of these new products, we had the pleasure of attending multiple tradeshows throughout the year to see familiar faces as well as meeting many new ones. After NAB Show in April, it was pretty much a spiral effect of shows. Shortly after NAB, we headed to the Texas Production Roundup, then Cine Gear Expo, SMPTE, IBC Show, AVXpo, NAB Show NY, and some dealer shows in-between.

We also had the pleasure of attending the SOC Awards in February and sponsoring the PERG breakfast at Cine Gear Expo. In addition to these, we recently became proud members of ESTA/PERG and the SOC, so we’re looking forward to continuing sponsoring these organizations into the 2018 year, as well as the ASC Awards this coming February.

Of course, we’d like to send a special thank you and appreciation to all of our partners, Ambassadors, and customers. We’re excited to continue all of our relationships for many years to come and look forward to creating new ones.

See you all on the road in 2018!

New at IBC 2017 from Core SWX and Zacuto

IBC is right around the corner and we’re thrilled to be sharing a booth (12.F55) again with our friends over at Zacuto.  Get a sneak peek below below to see what exciting new products both of us will be exhibiting at the show this year.

We’ve updated our Hypercore 98 line with a brand new Slim design. The new design, with make the Hypercore “Slim” 98 the slimmest, high-draw (12A, 15A peak), high capacity (98Wh) lithium ion battery pack on the market.  At nearly half the depth of the comparable competitors’ products, the new Hypercore Slim 98 will be the ultimate power solution for power hungry cameras, as well as supporting UAV, gimbal, and other handheld productions. They’re outfitted with all the popular features of the Hypercore series such as the multipurpose backlit runtime LCD that allows users to easily read the remaining runtime in hours and minutes while in use, and as a charger indicator when connected to a charger. There is a USB and p-tap on the side of the pack to allow users to plug in other devices for power while on set, or even at the airport to charge a cell phone (since they are travel friendly). Like all of the Core SWX battery offerings, it’s available in V-mount (HCS-98S) and 3-Stud mount (HCS-98AG), and the charger compatibilities are endless. The V-mount models will charge on RED, IDX, and Sony chargers, and the 3-Stud mount models will charge on Anton Bauer chargers. The V-mount model offers SMBUS data communication which delivers the exact percentage of remaining capacity to the camera’s VF/LCD to RED DSMC2, Sony, Blackmagic Design, etc.

Hypercore-Slim-98-S-and-AG_web

To complement the Hypercore Slim 98’s, Core SWX has the HC9 Mini battery packs and Fleet Micro chargers. The HC9 Mini’s are also travel friendly at 98Wh, have a 12A max load (15A peak), and equipped with all the features of Hypercore. The HC9 Mini’s have a short form factor, so it doesn’t interfere with any user’s top handle or any other possible accessories above the camera, and the p-tap and USB have been relocated to the top of the battery pack to not interfere with any I/O modules on the right side. This battery series is available in V-mount (HCM-9S), V-mount RED (HCM-9R), and 3-Stud mount (HCM-9AG).

HC9MINi_all_web_blog

The Fleet Micro series of chargers offer multiple key functions for battery packs that no other charger on the market has before. Besides being the fastest battery charger in the industry today (four 98wh packs in under 2 ½ hrs.), the charger offers a TEST mode to determine battery health and recharge performance on the on-board LCD, as well as a micro USB so the data can also be viewed and managed with a PC application. In addition to battery management, the Fleer Micro’s include a SafeFly feature that allows users to either charge the connected packs up to 30% or discharge to under 30% to make them acceptable for air travel. These chargers are available in four different models: FLEET-DM2A, FLEET-DM2S, FLEET-QM4A, FLEET-QM4S.

This year at IBC, Zacuto knew the GH5 would be worthy of their very first Cage design! This lightweight, “no-cage” cage is slim and compact, using the curves of the camera to define its shape.

It comes with an adjustable side grip with a coldshoe and a sturdy HDMI cable support. Add accessories like a top grip, rod mount, Atomos Inferno or Metabones mount to customize your cage. You can even add a baseplate and turn the GH5 Cage into a full Next Gen Recoil Rig!

gh5_blog_zacuto

After Zacuto worked with the Panasonic EVA1 in person last week, they can’t wait for it to hit the market. They created a few unique accessories to support this exceptional camera design, most notably a Z-Finder Pro to adapt the camera LCD screen into a viewfinder.

$7,495 US is a solid camera price point for smaller one or two man operations making the EVA1 an ideal camera to adapt to a Next Gen Recoil shoulder rig style. Next Gen Recoil rigs position your camera further back over your shoulder moving focusing and monitoring forward for a more balanced and comfortable all day shooting rig.

zacuto_eva1

EVA1 specific accessories include the Z-Finder Pro, a custom Top Plate to mount accessories, and a new Z-Grip Trigger flip-up style grip for the EVA1 removable grip.

We can’t wait to see you in Amsterdam! Be sure to stop by hall 12 booth F55 to check out all of this new gear and chat with us!

NAB 2017 Recap

Another awesome NAB is in the books. Between releasing two award winning products, having two booths (one with “Cores” Light beer), and seeing all of our great clients and industry friends as well as meeting new people, how could it not be?

The powerful, tiny and compact HC9 Mini battery packs were one of the two award winning products from us and an overall big hit this year with people coming by to specifically check out this “mini” battery they kept hearing about. To make the traditional 98Wh pack smaller, we shrunk the form factor by reducing it 1.2” in height, as well as slimming it down to under 2” in depth. We also relocated the P-tap output and USB 5v to the top of the pack, so there is no interference with many cameras I/O on the right side. We even had some of the HC9 Mini’s in clear casing to show the attendees what it looks like on the inside as well which was super cool for them to see. Special thanks to Production HUB for awarding them with their Award of Excellence. To check out more on the most slender battery packs in the industry today, take a look here.

prohub_award_webred_hc9mini-clear_web

The Dual and Quad Fleet Micro Chargers was the second award winning product, thanks to Newbay Media’s TV Technology Best of Show Award. These chargers have quite a few features that make them the most advanced and cross-compatible in the industry. They offer a complete battery management system for your battery “Fleet,” including an on-board LCD to monitor the battery packs’ smart battery data.  Besides being the fastest battery charger (four 98wh packs in under 2 1/2hrs.), the charger offers a TEST mode to determine battery health and recharge performance which can also be viewed and manage on a PC application via the micro USB on the rear of the unit.

The chargers also allow you to quickly prepare for air travel or shipment with the SafeFly mode.  With one touch of the onboard membrane button console, the charger will either charge the connected packs to up to 30% or discharge to under 30%. Along with addressing Core SWX battery packs, the chargers will also work on Anton/Bauer, RED, and many more battery packs.

They also offer a 90w DC 4-pin XLR power supply to power most cameras.  In addition to the on-board power supply, the charger doubles as a battery bank when in “Hypercine” power supply mode (unregulated 12v-16.8v DC).

They’re available in V-Mount and 3-Stud Mount, in dual and quad options.

bos_award_webfleet-micro_nab_web

That’s enough of explaining product at the moment though; let’s go back to some more NAB recapping. We had the pleasure of having Production HUB, Broadcast Beat, AbelCine, and KitPlus stop by to do video interviews with us. We also got a chance to stop by the Teradek Live broadcast to what our company is all about and where we are going. To see the videos, click on the names above (if there is no link, it’s because the video isn’t up yet – We’ll keep updating the page as they go up though).

Not only did we have our gear within our two booths, we had them spread out throughout the whole show. Companies such as Zacuto, Zeiss, Atomos, Tiffen, Tilta, B&H, Miller, and more had our batteries on display which we thank them for. In addition, we’d like to thank RED, Zacuto, Atomos, Zeiss, Miller, BlackMagic Design, and Davis & Sanford for lending us some of their awesome gear.

Lastly, the Core SWX team would like to thank everyone who stopped by to check out the gear and chat with us – We truly had a great time!

SOC Awards 2017

On February 11th, the Society of Camera Operators held their Award Ceremony and Core SWX were proud sponsors.  Held annually, this years ceremony was at the Hollywood Ballroom, and Core SWX team members were in attendance.

The SOC event, in addition to honoring outstanding achievements in camera operation, proceeds benefit the Children’s Vision Hospital.   After the members chatted, they headed to the pre-reception bar area and red carpet where the line was very long, but don’t worry, they got their moment.

SOC_3      SOC_1

As the night went on, people get thirsty, so there was no better way to quench their thirst at the “Core SWX” bar!  As our team members were talking to others around, the show of gratitude from the SOC members was overwhelming.

SOC_4

Now onto the awards part of the night!  It was incredible to see so much talent in one room where everyone encourages one another and how much the talent in front of the camera appreciates the talent behind the camera. All of the speeches given by the winners were very emotional, and you could tell how passionate everyone was about their line of work.  “Camera operators understand that they are the first to witness the shot before anyone else, and with that comes great responsibility. It’s the camera operators job to capture the directors vision but at the same time, take every shot with their artistic movement,” Zack Shannon, Core SWX, Sales Rep said.

The most memorable speech of the night was given by the Governor’s Award Honoree, Michael Keaton. Keaton expressed his gratitude for the camera operators and understands he wouldn’t be the actor he is today without the camera operators talent. He mentioned the relationship between an actor or actress and a camera operator is an important aspect of capturing and conveying a compelling message.

Overall, the SOC Awards was a great night and we look forward to sponsoring for many years to come.
